#OPEN MAC POWERBOOK G4 IN SAFE MODE INSTALL#

What these lines do is set the CPU speed reported by Open Firmware to OS X as an 867 MHz G4 processor system. If the command is properly typed and understood, Open Firmware will display “ok” at the end of each line after you hit “return”. Be mindful of capitalization, spaces, zeros, etc. Type the following lines exactly as shown below into the Open Firmware prompt.

Insert the Mac OS X Leopard Install DVD.ģ. Reboot your Mac and hold down the Cmd-Opt-O-F keys until you get a white screen with black text. To install Leopard on an “unsupported” G4 clocked under 867 MHz:ġ.

Note that some third-party additions to the System can prevent Leopard from booting – Unsanity’s Application Enhancer (APE) tops the list of add-ons – so you should make sure all of your software is up-to-date and may want to (or need to) disable System add-ons before installing Leopard. (We have a field report indicating that this hack does not work with the 667 MHz and 800 MHz DVI G4 PowerBooks – on those models, you may need to reset min-cpu-frequency and max-cpu-frequency as well.)
Be sure your firmware is up-to-date before attempting to install Leopard. It completely eliminates the need to hack the installer on the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installer DVD. Without further delay, here are some instructions I have passed on to a few friends already:Įditor’s note: Every Mac and Macintosh clone with PCI architecture supports Open Firmware, so this technique should work with any Mac that could possibly run Leopard. You will still need to meet the 512 MB of RAM requirement, but I wouldn’t suggest using less anyway. This will allow you to install without hacking an install disc or working in Target Disk Mode. Spoofing will have Open Firmware tell OS X that your G4 is up-to-speed until you reboot. I have found that, by far, the easiest way to install Leopard on unsupported G4s is to spoof the clock speed in Open Firmware before installing. I see few alternatives to use a modern browser on PPC. As long as plug-in support continues, inofficially and allegedly by accident, to work better than in any other PPC browser, I'll be a user on at least my Powerbook G4.

Despite the fierce development of the Firefox team Floodgap continue to churn out versions for Mac PowerPC Operating System. We're not only compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5, but we also build our browser specially optimized for your G3, G4 or G5, add AltiVec TM JPEG, HTML and WebM decoding acceleration for G4 and G5 Macintoshes, and soup up JavaScript performance with IonPower, our best-in-class just-in-time PowerPC script compiler. Any iBook G4 can install using this as t he first one in late 2003 came with Mac OS X 10.3 and stopped support at Mac OS X 10.4.11 while the latest iBook G4 came with Mac OS X 10.4.2 and stopped at Mac OS X 10.5.8, so ultimately, all iBook G4 models were upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger at some point.

The Apple Support Downloads page is most useful for finding software for more recent older Macs, particularly anything that is running a version of Mac OS X, even if it’s no longer a supported or updated system software release, like for Macs running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.5.

No other PC was designed like the early 2000 Apple computers. Crazy thought, a rack server as a main PPC mac, but hey it's still a Mac! All the computers on the list to the right are cool, and each one pushed Apple further and further into the modern world.
